Your stomach is part of a long; soft and bendy tube which runs all the way from your throat to the other end of your body. It sits slightly to the left of your oesophagus.
When you lie flat on your back, the 'long tube' flattens out so that the stomach fluids can flow back into the oesophagus. In babies the distance from the oesophagus to the throat is relatively short so liquids don't have far to travel to become an irritation.
Lying on the right side? If you lie on your right side, the stomach is higher that the oesophagus which means that the stomach fluids may flow easier down to the throat causing irritation. Lying on the left side? If you lie on your left side the digestive tube is not flat and the stomach is situated downhill from the oesophagus, so acidic stomach fluids are less likely to flow backwards to the throat and cause irritation.
In addition to this, elevating your baby on a sleeping wedge will provide enough downwards pressure to alleviate symptoms of reflux. If you can choose a side to position your baby on, go for their left side and elevated every time!
