Like most medical conditions, GORD has it's own big words. here is a breakdown of the keys words to help you understand where 'reflux' comes from.
Oesophagus - This word comes from the greek "to carry" and "to eat". The Oesophagus (or throat to you and me) is the tube that connects the back of your mouth (the pharynx) with the stomach.
Lower oesophageal Sphincter - LES is a muscular valve between the Oesophagus and the stomach. when you swallow, the valve opens to let the food into teh stomach. Then it should close tightly enough to keep acidic stomach contents from flowing backwards into the throat. knowing how the LEs works (or doesn't) will help you understand reflux.
Reflux - is a double joined word that can be either a noun or a verb. Reflux the noun, is the acidic stomach fluids that are allowed to flow back into the throat by the malfunctioning LES. Reflux the verb is what happens when the LES malfunctions. You would be perfectly correct in saying "the reflux was allowed to reflux back into the throat".
