Dealing
with a baby with Reflux is overwhelming for both parents, especially if
it’s your first child. You may be experiencing sleep deprivation,
self-doubt for both of you. Perhaps since the birth, Mum will be
feeling some degree of apprehension to have all things going well and
even frustration at not being able to make baby completely comfortable
and happy. The sensation a mother feels when her baby cries/screams for
long periods of time is indescribably overwhelming.
The most important
message on this page is You are not alone!
Web Help There
are many forums out there started by parents who feel just as we do.
It’s helpful to “talk” to others who are going through exactly what you
are. To see a list of great forums and chat sites about reflux go to
our useful links or Support Network pages. We sponsor a community
called Little Refluxers which concentrates on Infant reflux in the UK.
Books and Articles There
are several books that are written by parents of babies with Reflux.
Life on the Reflux Roller Coaster by Roni MacLean and Jean McNeil, and Acid Reflux Infants & Children by Tracy and Mike Davenport are two worth mentioning.
Ask For Help Recruit
friends, grandparents, extended family or trusted neighbours, including
older responsible kids to come hold the baby or entertain your older
children while you take naps or complete tasks. It’s important for you
to have some time to regroup both physically and mentally. Even just 10
– 20 minutes of personal time and a shower can totally change your
frame of mind.
Change of Scenery If
you feel completely overwhelmed just thinking about leaving the house
then you need to get out! Don’t worry that you will probably have sick
on your shirt or your baby. People understand that babies are sicky.
Learning to manage day-to-day activities with a baby with Reflux can
also do wonders in recovering any lost self-confidence you may have
suffered. Just be sure to pack enough spare clothing, bibs and burp
cloths.
Have a look at this page dedicated to the topic of getting out of the house.
