Products that can help
Reflux
in babies is such an uncomfortable condition that finding a wedge or a
sling or even just information from others in the same situation, can
make all the difference. Take a good look at the items you are
currently using with your baby. It will be worth the extra expense to
have a happier, more comfortable baby.
Look for items that
place baby in a slightly reclined position with a straight back and do
not cause him to slump or slouch. Once his stomach and back muscles
become stronger he will be able to keep pressure off his own tummy and
positioning devices will not be as critical.
Car Seats and Infant Carriers
Car seats can have a deeper “well” where the seat causes Baby to slouch. Look for car seats that have shallower wells and that recline slightly, putting less pressure is on his tummy or look at the Snuzzler in our products section. It can be used in car seats and buggies to provide additional support.
Buggies
Look for a buggy that has several reclining positions and has a shallow well.
Bouncy Seats
Like
car seats, many bouncy seats have deep wells or are designed so that
waist straps must be very tight in order to secure Baby. Look for ones
that have shallow wells and more comfortable fastening devices. You may
be able to place a rolled up hand towel underneath Baby’s bottom,
lifting him up and out of the well. Be sure that Baby is still safely
secured in the seat and do not leave him unattended.
High Chairs
Many high chairs now come with multiple positions, including a slightly reclined position. A 45 degree angle with a straight spine is preferable to a more upright position that causes Baby to slump.
Bibs
You
really can never have too many and make sure you buy as big as
possible! Perhaps put on two bibs at once so you can remove the top one
and still have a reserve. Try the messy bib
– it has a fleecy backing to help absorb liquids and lock them away
from baby’s clothes and also is longer than usual at 30cm, covering
baby and catching projectile liquids!
Covering Up
Often
the refluxing is quite dramatic and sick can be launched across one
side of the sofa to the other! Frequently wiping between couch cushions
and mopping up pools of liquid on the carpet? (luckily for us have a
leather couch which takes a beating, but is easily wiped down.)
But,
getting out and about, there is always a worry that the sickness will
spill over in someone elses house or in the car, where cleaning up is
harder to manage. We looked at several floor coverings or play mats
that might cover a large area to protect it, but also being a really
comfortable, machine washable play mat, changing mat etc.
