It is said that adult females are slightly more affected by reflux than males. The reason females are more prone to reflux is due to female hormones functioning to relax the muscles in the body. Hormones circulate in the blood and once exposed to parts of the body including muscles in the gastro-intenstinal tract they produce a relaxed state. As the oesophagus relaxes, the food moves slower down to the stomach increasing the time for the oesophagus to be affected by stomach acids rising.
